Two Young Pedestrians Seriously Injured In Surfside Road Car Crash

Two children suffered serious injuries Wednesday evening after being struck by a vehicle as they were walking on the Surfside Road bike path.

The chaotic accident scene unfolded just after 5 p.m. at the intersection of Surfside Road and Miacomet Avenue, where witnesses told the Current a Land Rover Discovery traveling north collided with a Honda CRV in the southbound lane, then hit the two boys who were on the bike path. According to public safety radio dispatches, the two victims were both 12-years-old.

Both juvenile victims were transported by ambulance to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, according to Nantucket Deputy Fire Chief Sean Mitchell, and a Medflight helicopter was called. It landed at the hospital around 6 p.m.

The female driver of the Land Rover that struck the children remained at the scene and was spotted being interviewed by police officers. The drivers of both vehicles were uninjured, and the cars were towed away from the scene.

Nantucket Police Lt. Angus MacVicar said Thursday afternoon that while he could not yet release details of the investigation into the accident, charges would be filed against one of the drivers. MacVicar did disclose that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

"At this point it’s still actively being worked through in terms of the accident reconstruction piece," MacVicar said. "There's no question there will be a host of charges as a result of the accident to one of the operators involved. But it’s not complete yet, so I can’t give you more information until it’s complete and until the operator has been given a copy of the violations."

The incident occurred simultaneously with two other emergency calls that came in at the same time. Nantucket Police Department officers, Nantucket Fire Department EMTs and heavy rescue apparatus all responded to the scene. Surfside Road was shut down for more than an hour.
